The Lady Lions varsity volleyball team finished its season in the Final Four at the weekend long GICAA State tournament..
The Lady Lions kicked off their tournament Friday, Oct. 25 at Agnes Scot College where they took on Trinity, #2 seed of GICAA’s Southern Region. WCA defeated Trinity in 3 games with final scores of 25-15, 25-13, and 25-23. By the end of the match, setter Liz Autry had 25 assists and senior captains Olivia Watson and Laura Scott Tomlin had led the team in kills with 11 for Watson and 8 for Tomlin. Team totals included: 27 kills, 3 blocks, 19 digs, and 13 service aces.
The following morning, Saturday, Oct. 26 WCA faced Cherokee and defeated the #4 seed from the Northwest region in 3 games, with final scores 25-13, 25-17, and 25-11. The match ended with team totals of 17 kills, 18 service aces, and 24 digs. Senior captain Olivia Watson shut down Cherokee’s offense at the net with 5 solid blocks. With this victory, the Lions advanced into the semi-final round of the State Championship.
The win over Cherokee advanced the Lady Lions in the semi-final round of the State Championship where the team faced the #1 seed from its region (Northeast), Horizon Christian. The first set ended with a close score of 25-23, but Horizon achieved the victory. Horizon took the next two sets 25-14 and 25-13, ending the Lion’s journey. The Lady Lions ended the match with team totals of 13 kills, 9 service aces, 12 digs, and 3 blocks. Horizon went on to win the 2013 GICAA State Championship.
The Lions finished their season as one of the Final Four in the GICAA State Championship, earning the team a banner that will be hung in the school gym.
In addition, senior captain Laura Scott Tomlin was elected to the 2013 GICAA All-State team. This honor was bestowed on her by the coaches of the Northeast region.
